LASIK

Question:

I havent but know a few who have, all but one have loved it.  The other had complications, it was cut too deep, had infections, still has to wear glasses. Personally I like "The Simpsons" take on it, in the future, everyone who had it, their eyes eventually fell out, hehe. Chris  (was 20-12, now barely 20-20, thanks scopes.)

Don’t ask – Don’t tell…

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –  If you have presbyopia, they can do mono-vision, where they correct one eye to 20/20 or better, and leave the other one about 20/40. You can’t get a medical with that setup.

Response:

I’m 20/100 uncorrected and 20/15 with glasses… My heart keeps saying, "Yes" to LASIK, but my brain keeps saying, "No"… Dunno who’s going to win… Denny

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Has anyone experienced the results of LASIK surgery? True and honest opinion. If yes, from where? I’ve had LASIK twice.  The first procedure I had ALL of the icky side effects you hear about.  My flaps were thin, I had extra cells so the cornea expanded like pie crust (about twice the size) so the surgeon had lots of cornea to try to fit back onto the eye.  He ended up having to trim it during the surgery and shave off  some more a few weeks later when it tried to double up under itself.  After the first surgery my eyes were about 20/30 but regressed to 20/70.  After 16 months or so (and some newer research said that said it was a good risk to try again) I had the surgery done again.  This time the surgeon pulled the blinds so no one else would see the mess, but it went perfectly.  I now have 20/20 +1  in the left eye and 20/20 – 2 in the right.  I have some uncorrected astigmatism in the right eye, but not enough to bother me too much.  I’ve always been corrected to a very sharp, better than 20/15, so 20/20 is taking some getting used to :-) .  Of course I can now make it all the way across the bedroom at night without getting hurt! (my eyes were really bad). Margy

They don’t have to ask because they will figure it out. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Don’t ask – Don’t tell…  If you have presbyopia, they can do mono-vision, where they correct one eye to 20/20 or better, and leave the other one about 20/40. You can’t get a medical with that setup.

Response:

As a person in that field, not necessarily… Depends on the type of vision screening machine… Denny

Margy, I was kinda wondering what your final outcome was — since I hadn’t heard anything, I was afraid to ask! So would you classify your LASIK surgery as a success? — Jay ("20/800") Honeck Iowa City, IA Warrior N33431

Response:

Margy, Glad to hear that you have finally gotten the results you were looking for. I remember meeting you shortly after the first procedure when things weren’t healing as well as you had hoped.  I am glad things are better.  Maybe one day, I’ll give it a try. I had LASIK almost 4 years ago.  My Mom and I had it done the same day, then 2 weeks later I took my wife and her brother to have it done, then two weeks later my uncle had it.  18 months after that, my cousin and her husband had it done, and two more of my cousins have had it since. Out of 9 people in my family who’ve had LASIK, two had to have one eye "touched up" after about 4 months.  Other than that, none of us have had any complications.  I had "star effect" on lights at night with glasses or contacts, and it is a little better after LASIK (never even knew that lights didn’t look that way at night, anyway). My experience has been very positive.  After wearing glasses or contacts for 21 years, LASIK gave me 20/15 vision (from a little worse than 20/800), with a 15 minute procedure.  I drove my mom and myself back to the doctor the next day for a checkup just wearing sunglasses.  It was awesome.  If you have presbyopia, they can do mono-vision, where they correct one eye to 20/20 or better, and leave the other one about 20/40.  This is what my Mom and uncle had done.  After you get used to it, it eliminates or postpones the need for reading glasses. You can’t get a medical with that setup.

Actually you can get at least a third class medical if you’re 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other.  The FAA frowns on monovision contact lenses but they havn’t (to my knowledge) outlawed permanent monovision with lasik. Howard Neff, M.D. N1BQ
